AdventureSmart is the outdoor safety campaign with a very simple message. Ask yourself three questions before you set off:

  • Do I have the right gear?
  • Do i know what the weather will be like?
  • Am I confident i have the knowledge and skills for the day?

Do I have the right gear?

If this question prompt you to ask ‘what is the right gear?’ then you need help. Outdoor kit doesn’t need to be expensive but does need to keep you warm and dry. In the case of boots they need to ïŹt well as there is nothing like a blister to ruin a good day’s walking.

Do I know what the weather will be like?

As we know the weather has the potential to make or spoil your day. This doesn’t have to mean that a spot of drizzle or even a howling gale has to stop us in our tracks. Like a good Scout, being prepared and adapting your plans is the key to being in control of your day. Check the weather forecast – the Met Office is a good place to start.

Am I confident I have the knowledge & skills for the day?

Adventure allows us to step outside our comfort zone and is a great way to discover a zest for life. Being AdventureSmart simply means thinking about your own experience and skills. Choosing an adventure that you know that is within your skill set is part of the fun. If you want to do something that pushes beyond this there are many ways to find a guide or instructor to help you.

AdventureSmart UK started as AdventureSmart Wales in 2018. Funded via the Welsh Government’s Tourism Product Innovation Fund it aimed to encourage new innovative product ideas working in partnership which will have a greater impact and attract more visitors with additional contributions from Snowdonia National Park Authority, British Mountaineering Council and Welsh Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The aim is to reduce the number of avoidable incidents which the rescue and emergency services deal with each year.  Experts from leading safety and sporting organisations have developed these messages to provide all the essential information needed for people to get outdoors, confident that they have prepared for a great day.

These videos from AdventureSmart are a great start.
